Seasons of availability: Spring and Fall.
Landscape Value:
Exceptional flowers with sizes ranging from 2-inch up to 5 inches across may open from December through April. Colors range from white to all shades of pink and red. There are hundreds of cultivars, with some flowers having double blooms and multi-colors. Cherished in southern gardens, Camellia japonica is used in borders, mixed plantings, and focal points. Deer browsing can be an issue especialy with young plantings. Attracts pollinators and provides winter habitat for songbirds.
Plant Care:
Spring Camellia is hardy to Zones 7-9. Prune before July to ensure flower bud set and shelter from severe cold. Does best in moderate sun to part shade in well drained acidic soils. Can have scale and some mild fungal issues and is not tolerant of alkaline soil. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
