Smooth Hydrangea
Native with Showy Blooms in Late Spring.
Botanical Name: Hydrangea arborescens
Varieties we carry:
Incrediball
Annabelle
The following varieties may be available for special request: Incrediball Storm Proof, Flowerfull, Invincibell Ruby
Seasons of availability: Fall, Winter, and Spring
Landscape Value:
Smooth Hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs native to the eastern United States including South Carolina. They grow 3 to 5 feet tall and wide on average. The wild variety has a lacecap flower, but most varieties available have white to green mop-head style blooms. A few modern hybrids have been bred to have pink flowers. Unlike traditional french hydrangeas, the flower color is not affected by the soil pH. It is a larval host plant and should be considered for pollinator, native, and shade gardens.
Plant Care:
Smooth Hydrangeas prefer moist, but thoroughly well-draining soil and partial shade. It will tolerate some sun if given consistent moisture, but excess water will encourage Phytophthora root rot. It blooms on new growth and can be pruned close to the ground during the winter to encourage new growth during the spring. The blooms are often large and after a heavy rain, they will often become heavy and fall over (although there are newer varieties that do not fall over as often). Weak and damaged stems should be removed in early spring.
