Shrub Roses
Fast growing, sun loving, pollinator friendly, long blooming shrub.
Botanical Name: Rosa (Shrub hybrids)
Varieties we carry:
Knock Out Roses (Double Red, Double Pink, Orange Glow, Easy Beezy)
Drift Roses (Red, Popcorn, Apricot, Peach, Pink)
The following varieties may be available for special request: Oso Easy Series
Seasons of availability: All year.
Landscape Value:
Shrub Roses are woody deciduous hybrids. They grow quickly from 2-6’ tall and wide depending on variety. Flowers range in size, shape, color, and scent. The flowers are often single (5 petals), but some varieties have double flowers as well. Shrub Roses are susceptible to deer browsing and insect problems include Japanese beetles, thrips, and mites. Disease problems may include botrytis, blights, powdery mildew, leaf spots, and anthracnose, but most new varieties have moderate to good resistance to black spot (which is deadly for traditional roses). Rose Rosette disease is a virus that is often spread by mites, and it is the only disease that would be considered un-manageable on Shrub Roses. Grow roses in cottage or cutting gardens or use them at the back of a border, with low growing varieties working as groundcover. Shrub roses provide moderate wildlife value by attracting pollinators (bees, butterflies) and providing shelter in their dense foliage and thorns for small birds.
Plant Care:
Roses require full sun and organically rich, well-drained slightly acidic to neutral soils. Shrub Roses are heat and frost tolerant and are hardy to growing Zones 5-10. Most varieties require yearly pruning in late winter. Dead heading or light trimming will encourage more blooms through the growing season. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
