Privet
Highly reliable, cointainer choice, aggresive grower, broadleaf evergreen shrub.
Botanical Name: Ligustrum
Varieties we carry:
Sunshine
Recurvifolium
Texanum
Rotundifolium/Coriaceum
The following varieties may be available for special request: Jack Frost
Seasons of availability: All year.
Landscape Value:
Privet is a large, evergreen to semi-evergreen woody shrub or small tree native to Asia. Japanese privet is the primary variety available as it is considered less invasive. ‘Sunshine’ is reportedly sterile, but reversions to the green form should be managed to prevent invasive tendencies. Most varieties grow quickly to 6-12’ high and wide. This highly reliable plant has lustrous dark green foliage with small white fragrant flowers in late Spring. Although rare, phytopthora root rot is the primary disease concern. Copper deficiency could be a concern if grown in contaiers. Weevils and mites occasionaly damage the foliage.
Plant Care:
Privet grows best in full sun to partial shade and in a wide range of soil conditions (except constantly wet). Privet is hardy to growing Zones 7-10. When pruning, keep in mind that next year's blossoms will appear on new growth. Privet tolerates severe pruning, but avoid late summer pruning to minimize cold damage in the fall.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
