The classic pollinator-friendly annual.

Botanical Name: Petunia

Plant Care and Characteristics:

Petunias are herbaceous perennials in Tropical regions, but should be treated as an annual in South Carolina. Petunias make great color for spring gardens. Petunia flowers are also incredibly variable in terms of size, shape, hue, and color pattern; some petunias even have sweet fragrances. Flowers can be ruffled, fringed, or double, in almost any color imaginable. Some flowers will be one solid color while others have contrasting veins or edges, and in some varieties the flower even has a star pattern.

Petunias tolerate full sun to partial shade and in light and well-drained soils. While it can survive in heavy shade, the blooms will suffer. Deadheading provides optimal performance and increased flower bud production. Leggy plants should be pinched back. This plant has moderate drought tolerance. It can tolerate poor soils as long as they have good drainage. Plant in mass in beds and border fronts; along the edges of patios and hardscapes; in containers, hanging baskets or window boxes; or in interior sunrooms in the winter. Include them also in butterfly and pollinator gardens as the flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Petunias perform best in moderate temperatures and may need to be trimmed and fertilized in the summer to improve performance late in the season.
