Landscape Value:
A highly reliable evergreen shrub. Nandina domestica, also known as heavenly bamboo, produces toxic berries than can be invasive. Most varieties available are dwarf, non spreading, and either sterile or minimally invasive. Nandina produces compound leaves on stiff stalk-like branches. Growth rate is moderate to 3-8’ tall and 2-5’ wide with an upright habit. The foliage color can range from a lemon lime to brilliant orange to reddish purple depending on the variety and the season. Nandina is generally insect and disease free. Phytophthora root rot and white flies are occasionally a concern. Deer resistance is generally good. Nandina has many uses in the landscape including as small specimens to foundation plantings and as accents or container plants.
Plant Care:
Nandina grows best in full sun to partial shade and is hardy in growing Zones 6-9. Nandina can tolerate a variety of soil conditions and is adaptable to environmental extremes. Once established this plant is one of the most durable broadleaf evergreens. This plant can be pruned, but care should be taken to prune the stalks in the interior of the plant rather than shearing the outer foliage. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
