Muhly grass is an herbaceous perennial ornamental grass native to Coastal Carolinas. Muhly is a long lived clumping grass that matures quickly to around 3’ tall and 3’ wide in the upstate. The late season color is showstopping: delicate pink, purple, or white flowers emerge in early Fall. The plumes pruduce cloud like masses above the fine, dark green foliage. Muhly Grass is generally pest and disease free, making it a low-maintenance perennial. Like most true grasses, Muhly has good resistance to deer browsing. Muhly Grass works well in groups or masses for Fall season color. Has high wildlife value by providing essential food, shelter, and nesting material for birds, small mammals, and beneficial insects. It can be used in any garden style as a ground cover, mass planting or border.
Plant Care:
Muhly grows best in full sun and is tolerant of varied soil types as long as the soil is well drained. Muhly is hardy to growing Zones 5-9, however, poorly drained soils can promote severe winter damage. Muhly grass tolerates heat, humidity, drought, and poor soil and is highly salt-tolerant. Cut the entire plant back to 2-6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring (February-March) before new growth starts. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
