Landscape Value:
A woody, evergreen conifer available in various sizes and habits depending on species and variety. We carry Chinese Junipers, Shore Junipers, Native Junipers, and hybrids. Multiple available varieties have many forms and heights from low ground covers to spreading shrubs and medium to large trees. Depending on variety, Juniper shows fair to good deer resistance. Juniper use in the landscape includes, screens, hedges, windbreaks, groundcovers, foundation plantings, rock garden plantings, and specimens. Juniper is relatively low-maintenance but twig blight, stem and root disease can be problematic on some varieties when conditions are too moist. Cedar apple rust is a minor concern on native varieties. The native Junipers have high wildlife value by providing crucial year-round resources.
Plant Care:
This slow growing plant adapts to most soils from acidic to alkaline if kept moderately moist but well-drained. Juniper grows best in full sun and is considerably drought tolerant once established. Juniper is hardy to growing Zones 4-9. Prune in early spring or late summer to fall, thinning dense foliage to let light in. Shearing should be done with caution, as they will not regrow from bare wood. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
