Botanical Name: Ternstroemia ‍ ‍

Varieties we carry:

  • Ternstroemia gymanthera

  • Hunny Bun

The following varieties may be available for special request: Crown Jewel, Juliet

Seasons of availability: All year.

Landscape Value:

A woody, broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree native to Asia.  Moderate growing to 8-12’ tall and 5-6’ wide.  Thick glossy dark green leaves can transition to maroon or copper hues as temperatures drop in Fall depending on the variety. Small white slightly fragrant flowers appear in May to June on mature plants. Japanese Cleyera is mildly deer resistant, but is generally free of disease and insect problems.  Phytopthora root rot is occasionally an issue in poorly drained areas. A good accent plant that can be used for screens and hedges. Japanese Cleyera offers limited wildlife value.

Plant Japanese Cleyera in highly organic well-drained soil in the full sun to partial shade.  In hot southern summers, it appreciates afternoon shade and it can in fact tolerate almost full shade. Prune Cleyera in late Winter of early Spring, just before new growth starts. Japanese Cleyera performs best when given protection from strong winds and is hardy to Zones 6-9. Cleyera grows taller in light shade than heavy sun. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.

‍Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
