Landscape Value:
Hinoki Cypress has scale-like leaves with fan shaped, flat sprays. The straight species Hinoki Cypress can get 50-70 tall and 10-20 wide. However, most of what are available are dwarf varieties that are more suited for home landscape use. There is some wildlife value as shelter, and deer resistance is fair. Used as a specimen, with dwarf varieties valuable for rock gardens and foundation planting.
Plant Care:
Hinoki Cypress prefers moist, well-drained soil in a sunny, protected (from wind) area. Hardy to Zones 5-8, showing some susceptibility to bagworms, root rot, and juniper blight. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall and Winter.
