Depending on the variety, the plant produces ball-shaped flower clusters ("mop-heads") or flat clusters of small flowers surrounded by a ring of more prominent flowers ("lacecaps". ) Flower color can range from white to pink, blue, or purple flowers, depending on the soil's acidity. Blue flowers develop with acidic soil (when aluminum is present) and pink flowers in alkaline soil. Hydrangea need protection from deer. Leaf spot can be a nuisance but can be remedied with good fertility and airflow. Plant in a woodland or naturalized area, a shaded foundation planting, hedge, or as a privacy screen.
Plant Care:
French Hydrangea performs best in areas with dappled sunlight, partial shade, or deep shade, needing protection from afternoon sun. Water frequently until established. French Hydrangea are fairly tolerant of soil types, but they prefer moist, well-drained soils. French Hydrangea is hardy to Zones 6-10. Avoid pruning if possible as buds are formed on previous season’s growth. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall and Winter.
