Viburnum (Evergreen)
Fast growing, glossy leaves, evergreen shrub that needs shelter from extreme cold.
Botanical Name: Viburnum
Varieties we carry:
Moonlit Lace
Chindo
Shades of Pink
Seasons of availability: Spring and Fall.
Landscape Value:
A broadleal woody evergreen shrub. Most Viburnum will rapidly grow to 10 to 12’ tall and 6 to 8’ wide, but there are more compact varieties available like Moonlit Lace. Evergreen Viburnums have an upright-rounded habit with lustrous dark green leaves throughout the year. Most varieties have clusters of tiny white flowers in the Spring. In the landscape, Viburnum works well as an evergreen hedge or screen. Plant it as a large accent shrub, in borders, or open woodlands in a sunny location. Viburnum is generally pest and disease free, but some varieties may have issues with thrips. Deer may damage plants in pressured situations. Viburnum provides nectar for pollinators and moderate wildlife shelter. Some varieties develop small dark blue berries as well.
Plant Care:
Viburnum grows best in moist, slightly acid, well-drained, fertile soil with full to partial sun. Most Evergreen Viburnum have good drought tolerance once established, particularly in partial sun. Some afternoon shade in the summer helps keep the foliage dark and glossy. Prune no more than one-third of the shrub after flowering and be sure to shelter from severe cold. Evergreen Viburnums are hardy to growing Zones 7-9. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
