Landscape Value:

Butterfly bush is a vigorous shrub or perennial with vibrant colored flowers with moderate fragrance ranging from white, yellow, pink, and shades of blue to purple and red. These summer blooming flowers do great in borders or cottage gardens. Traditional varieties grow rapidly sometimes over 10 feet in height. Dwarf varieties are slower and may be kept as low as 2 feet tall with annual pruning.

Plant Care:

Butterfly bush itself is a somewhat aggressive grower and can outcompete other plants in close proximity. Plant Butterfly Bushes in a spot with at least 6-8 hours of full sun and thoroughly well-draining soil, as they are succeptible to root rot. There are rarely affected by diseases or insects, but spider mites can be a nuisance. Water new plants regularly until established, but after a few weeks they are drought-tolerant and prefer less watering.  Annual pruning is essential; cut them back to about 12 inches in late Winter or early Spring to encourage blooms and rejuvenate the interior. Butterfly Bush does best in hardiness Zones 5-9.   Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.

Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
