Landscape Value:

A woody, needled evergreen tree or shrub. Arborvitae is a low-maintenance plant with many varieties ranging from large 40’ trees to 18” shrubs. Sizes closely parallel the growth rate of the plant.  Use this tree in the landscape as a specimen in a foundation planting, recreational play area, or winter garden. Planted in groups it performs well as a hedge, privacy screen, or windbreak. Thuja occidentalis is native from the Southern Appalacian mountains to Canada.  The Green Giant group of arborvitae are a hybrid between Thuja standishii from Asia and the west coast native Thuja plicata. Damage from deer browsing can be a serious problem particularly on Thuja occidentalis.  Plicata hybrids show better deer resistance. Arborvitae offer wildlife value mainly as winter shelter in the south.

Plant Care:

Arbroviate does well in full sun. Some varieties can also tolerate partial shade. This plant is easily transplanted as it can tolerate most soils, as long as not excessively wet or on dry exposed sites.  Arborviate is hardy to growing Zones 3-7, and hybrids perform well into Zone 8. Prune in late winter to early spring for best results. Trim only the green, outer foliage to encourage a dense conical shape. Shearing should be done with caution, as they do not regrow well from bare wood. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.

Ideal planting seasons: Fall and Winter.
