Ajuga (Bugleflower)
Shade loving, good deer resistance, perennial evergreen groundcover.
Botanical Name: Ajuga reptans
Varieties we carry:
Black Scallop
Chocolate Chip
Burgundy Glow
The following varieties may be available for special request: Catlin's Giant, Blue Muffin
Seasons of availability: Spring primarily, sometimes Fall.
Landscape Value:
Ajuga forms a dense mat with clusters of purple or blue flower spikes in Spring to early Summer. This plant works well as a ground cover or mass planting on a slope or in a woodland area. Ajuga has wildlife value supporting bees, butterflies, and birds with good deer resistance.
Plant Care:
Ajuga does best in partial to full shade, growing in hardiness Zones 3-9. While Ajuga is tolerant of slightly wet soils, it prefers well drained soils with good air circulation. Some varieties of Ajuga have shown good resistance to Phytophthora root rot. Crown rot can be a problem in very humid conditions and in heavy soils. Divide these plants when they grow too crowded in the Spring or Fall to improve air circulation in garden beds.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
