Landscape Value:

A 3 to 6’ high and wide shrub with semi-evergreen foliage. This woody, hybrid shrub, with nativity from Asia, has dark green foliage in the Summer, changing to a bronze-red in Fall into early Winter.  Many varieties have variegated foliage, adding white to yellow and sometimes pink or orange coloration. Abelia is a long blooming shrub with clusters of slightly fragrant, white to pink flowers from May through frost. Abelia is an easy to grow shrub, doing best in full sun to part shade.  Abelia has no serious disease or insect issues. The flowers of Albelia attracts pollinators, being an underused shrub for butterflies.  Abelia prefers well drained soil and shows good resistance to deer, pollution, and drought.  Abelia is often used for mass plantings, bank covers, or even hedges in the South, adding long lived flowers and great textural effects to the landscape.

Plant Care:

Abelia is hardy to Zones 5-9. Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage flowering, which occurs on new growth, and water regularly during establishment and occasionally during dry spells. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
