Spirea is a compact deciduous shrub that is native to Asia. Spirea will grow 4-6’ tall with equal spread, but most varieties available are dwarf and some may not exceed 2.5 ft tall. Flower color is usually pink but some varieties have white flowers. Generally Spirea has a dense mounding habit, forming a rounded or dome shape. Many varieties have colorful foliage in the Spring as well as the Fall. Spiraea is generally problem free, but they can be sensitive to many of the diseases and insects that attack other rose family members including leaf spot, fire blight, powdery mildew, root rot, aphids, leaf roller and scale. Use this plant in a border, in groups, as a specimen, along walkways or anywhere the color show can be enjoyed. Spirea attracts a wide range of pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds with its nectar-rich flowers.
Spirea grows in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil and is hardy to Zones 3-8. Spring bloomers can be pruned right after the flowers are spent. Prune summer-bloomers in late Winter. Remove dead wood and trim old or weak canes of spring varieties to the ground annually. Spireas are fast growers and will recover quickly, so do not be afraid to cut them back. After flowers on any spirea fade, remove them for a subsequent flush of blooms. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
