Landscape Value:
Eastern Redbud is a deciduous ornamental tree native to eastern North America. They typically grow 20-30’ tall with equal or slightly larger spread. Redbud is an early bloomer with rose pink to purple flowers in the Spring. Highly ornamental, with striking flowers, heart shaped leaves, and graceful branching. Many cultivated varieties have yellow, purple, orange or variegated foliage. There are also dwarf and weeping varieties that have some variations of foliage color. Redbud is very effective as a single specimen. They excel as an understory tree in woodland and naturalized areas. Redbud have high wildlife value as a larval host plant, with flowers attracting bees and butterflies.
Plant Care:
Although Redbuds have very high ornamental value, there are significant hurdles to growing them in the heat of the Southeastern US. Bark canker, Ambrosia Beetle, Phytophthora root rot, and Verticillium wilt are all serious concerns. Leaf-hoppers, scale, Leaf spot and caterpillars can also cause damage to Redbud. Redbud does well in growing Zones 5-9 in areas where the canopy of the tree can reach into the sun, but the roots and trunk remain shaded from afternoon heat. Prepare the planting hole well to improve drainage and mulch the base to retain moisture. Fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
