Pittosporum
Evergreen salt tolerant shrub with small fragrant flowers.
Botanical Name: Pittosporum
Varieties we carry:
Mojo
Wheeler’s Dwarf
Variegata
Seasons of availability: Spring
Landscape Value:
Pittosporum, or Japanase Mock Orange, is an excellent evergreen shrub for coastal areas. Due to its sensitivity to cold, it is best used as an accent in protected, partly shady areas. The species can reach over 10 ft in height, but dwarf varieties like Mojo and Wheeler’s Dwarf can easily be maintained to around 3 ft.
Plant Care:
Most species of Pittosporum are typically considered hardy in zones 9-10. Most selections of Japanese Pittosporum can be succesfully planted in the Upstate of South Carolina in certain areas under protection. Well drained slighly moist soil is necessary to limit Phytophthora root root issues. There are very few signicant insect or disease issues, and Pittosporum is reasonably resistant to deer.
Ideal planting season: Spring
