Oakleaf Hydrangea is a fast growing deciduous shrub that can reach 10-15’ tall with equal spread. There are several varieties that may be kept as low as 4-6’ tall and wide. Large cone shaped panicles of creamy white flowers bloom during late spring to early summer and measure 6 to 12 inches long. Like most hydrangeas, the showy part of the flower cluster is technically a bract, which prolongs the duration of the bloom. The bract on most Oakleaf Hydrangeas will turn a shade of pink at the end of the bloom period. Fall color is a nice addition to the ornamental value, as most varieties turn burgundy to red before slowly dropping the foliage in the winter. Oakleaf Hydrangea needs protection from deer. There are several minor fungal and insect issues. Root rot is the most serious concern in poorly drained soils. Oakleaf Hydrangea works well in children’s gardens, cottage gardens, native and pollinator gardens. They also work as a mass planting or specimen in the landscape.
Hardy to growing Zones 5-9, Oakleaf hydrangea is native to the Gulf Coast region making it more tolerant of heat and humidity than many other hydrangeas. It does best in morning sun in acidic soil with excellent drainage. Oakleaf Hydrangea blooms on old wood, so pruning should be limited to removing dead material if possible. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
