Mondo Grass
Highly reliable, cointainer choice, shade loving, evergreen groundcover that may spread.
Botanical Name: Ophiopogon
Varieties we carry:
Dwarf
Regular
Crystal Falls
The following varieties may be available for special request: Black Mondo
Seasons of availability: All year.
Landscape Value:
A broadleaf evergreen ground cover or ornamental grass. Mondo Grass is highly reliable with a low-clumping habit forming a mat by runners (stolons). Attractive clumps of grass-like leaves (narrower than liriope), with tiny spikes of lilac flowers appearing in Summer on the Dwarf and Regular Mondo grass. Mondos are excellent ground covers that can tolerate foot traffic and make a good turf alternative for shady areas. Crystal Falls is a giant mondo, exceeding 2 ft tall and wide with blades up to 1 inch in width. Mondo Grass works in landscapes as a border, at the foundation, along walkways or patios, and even as a filler for containers. Mondo Grass shows susceptibility to deer browsing but is relatively pest and disease free.
Plant Care:
Mondo Grass prefers shade and moist, well-drained soils, but will tolerate some sun if moisture is steady. Mondo grass can be mowed yearly, but it is much slower to regenerate than Liriope. Mondo Grass is hardy to growing Zones 6-10. Trim ragged or dead foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide large clumps every 2-3 years in early spring to propagate and maintain plant health. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
