Seasons of availability: All year.

Landscape Value:

Evergreen, woody shrub with medium sized, dark green, glossy leaves. Showy, lightly fragrant flowers range from September to December with some varieties exhibiting double blooms and colored margins. In the landscape, fall blooming Camellias work well as an accent plant, a privacy hedge, or a tall foundation planting. Fall Camellias have smaller blooms than Camellia japonica on average; but they are more sun tolerant, more resistant to Phytophthora root rot, slightly more cold hardy, and they come in a wider range of shapes and sizes.  Deer browsing can be an issue especialy with young plantings.

Plant Care:

Fall Camellia is hardy to Zones 7-9. Prune before July to ensure flower bud set and shelter from severe cold.  Does best in moderate sun to part shade in well drained acidic soils.   Can have scale and some mild fungal issues and is not tolerant of alkaline soil. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.

Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
