Landscape Value:
Distylium (commonly Isu tree) is a highly reliable, woody, evergreen shrub. Depending on the variety, the cascading to lateral growth habit ranges from three to ten feet in height and four to twelve feet wide. Distylium has glossy dark green to blue green leaves. Works in the landscape in small groups or mass plantings along a border or walkway. Can be used on slopes for erosion conrol where some height is needed but large areas need to be covered quickly. The more compact varieties of Distylium work well in the nooks of cottage or formal gardens and they can be planted in a row and pruned to form a privacy hedge or screen. Distylium shows no resistance to deer browsing, but it has no major insect or disease issues. Distylium may be a good alternative shrub for Boxwoods susceptible to Blight or Junipers in low light conditions.
Plant Care:
Grows best in full sun but tolerates partial shade with a moderate to fast growth rate. Distylium is hardy to Zones 6-9, but they need protection from late frosts. Distylium is considered more wet tolerant than many evergreen shrubs, but root rot is a concern if planted in poorly drained wet soil. Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
Ideal planting seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
