Seasons of availability: Spring and Fall.

Landscape Value:

Both the native American and Japanese Beautyberry are available. American Beautyberries are larger plants up to around 8 ft tall and wide, while Asian types typically remain under 6 ft. Ornamental value is seen in profuse magenta fruits produced in the Fall. Great shrub for massing or naturalized areas, as the American Beautyberry fruit is an excellent food source for birds and small mammals.

Plant Care:

Beautyberry does well in sun to moderate shade and prefers moist but thoroughly well drained soil.  Plants are relatively pest and disease resistant if cultural preferences are met. American Beautyberry is suited for hardiness Zones 7-11, while the Japanese Beautyberry performs better in slighly cooler conditions in hardness Zones 5-8. Both can be pruned to 12” above the base to encourage more compact growth, or left without pruning to mature into a tall woody shrub.  Mulch the prepared soil base to retain moisture and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer to encourage new growth.
