Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’ is a beautiful selection of native Wisteria that is compact, shrubby and slow growing. Spring flowering occurs from April into May on the terminals of new growth with a background of maturing gray green compact foliage. The delayed bud growth and flowering reduces the loss of flower buds to late freezes. Flowers are a vivid lavender purple produced in 6 to 8 inch compact racemes on the terminals of new growth. The slightly fragrant blooms even appear on one-year old plants. Amethyst Falls will repeat flower in mid and late summer.
Summer pruning of vigorous shoots will stimulate growth terminating in short racemes of flower buds. Dormant season pruning will not remove all flower buds. This characteristic allows gardeners to train Amethyst Falls onto arbors or to an espalier form. Amethyst Falls will become shrubby when trained into tree form if the gardener prunes back vining shoots and reduces fertilization. Heavy fertilization will promote vining growth for covering trellises and arbors when desired.
Growth and flowering are best when the plant is grown under full sun conditions. Amethyst Falls is tolerant of shade, but flowering may be somewhat reduced. This lovely native vine is hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.
